Organizational Context
UNICEF operates in over 190 countries, dedicated to saving children's lives, defending their rights, and helping them reach their full potential. In Mauritania, UNICEF's country program (2024-2027) aims to ensure equitable access to quality essential social services and a safe environment for all children, especially the most vulnerable. The child protection component focuses on combating harmful social norms, strengthening community engagement, and consolidating the child protection system. Mauritania is a key migration hub, hosting a significant refugee population, making the protection of refugee and migrant children a priority.
Job Purpose
This UN Volunteer assignment, under the "Youth on the Move" initiative, aims to support UNICEF's existing child protection team in Mauritania. The initiative provides paid volunteer opportunities for young refugees, displaced, and migrant individuals aged 20-32 who face barriers transitioning from learning to employment. The volunteer will contribute to the monitoring of programs and coordination with partners, including civil society organizations and the government. Under the direct supervision of the Child Protection Specialist, the UN Volunteer will contribute to the analysis of the situation of migrant and refugee children in Mauritania. Responsibilities include supporting regular field missions to monitor the implementation of UNICEF interventions, assisting in organizing coordination meetings with partners, and participating in the identification and sharing of lessons learned to enhance stakeholder capacity. The volunteer will also support the organization of focus group discussions with migrant and refugee children to better assess their needs, contribute to documenting human-interest stories and case studies from child protection programs, and perform any other tasks necessary for achieving the UN Resilience Programme objectives.

Skills
Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural and social sensitivity, and the ability to work inclusively with diverse partners are crucial. The role requires personal motivation, adaptability in demanding environments, and the capacity to work within a multicultural team. Proficiency in digital tools and Microsoft Office is necessary. Adherence to UNICEF's values (Care, Respect, Integrity, Trust, Accountability, Sustainability) is expected.
