Teaching English to Underprivileged Children in Vietnam
Organizational Context
Better Life Vietnam (BLV), established in 2010 and registered as a Social Enterprise in 2016, is dedicated to enhancing educational conditions for underprivileged children and youth in Vietnam. The organization focuses on reducing the burden on poor families by providing access to knowledge and education through its core projects: Books Library, Scholarship, and English Class. BLV operates within an environment where English education is a significant challenge, especially for students from low-income and rural areas.
Job Purpose
This role aims to address the critical gap in English language education in Vietnam, particularly for underprivileged children and youth who lack access to quality learning and native speaker interaction. The volunteer will contribute to the Online English Class Program, designed to improve English communication skills and build confidence. By providing conversational practice and support, the volunteer will help students overcome challenges in spoken English, thereby enhancing their educational opportunities and contributing to SDG 4 (Quality Education). The assignment seeks to empower students to express themselves more comfortably in English.
Responsibilities
The volunteer will conduct online conversational English practice sessions for beginner-level children aged 6-14. Each session will last one hour, up to three times per week, with 1-5 children per group, utilizing provided lesson materials and structured guidance. Key duties include leading practice sessions, focusing on pronunciation, spoken communication, and confidence-building. The volunteer will also assist in identifying and correcting errors in spelling, grammar, and word usage, and support vocabulary development. Creating supplementary lesson materials or interactive activities is encouraged with prior approval. Responsibilities also include reviewing materials in advance, participating in orientation and trial sessions, and completing student evaluation sheets post-course.
Work Experience
While formal teaching experience or a certificate is desirable but not required, volunteers should possess strong English communication skills, patience, and a genuine interest in supporting children's English learning. Experience with children, online facilitation, or creating educational activities is considered an asset. Familiarity with Google Meet is also beneficial.
Skills
