Organizational Context
The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) in Guatemala operates under a mandate established in 2005 to observe the human rights situation, report on findings, and provide legal and technical advice to national authorities and civil society. Its activities aim to enhance national capacities for human rights protection and promotion, aligning with OHCHR's global strategic objectives. The office focuses on strengthening organizational effectiveness in communication, promotion, and advocacy of human rights within Guatemala.
Job Purpose
This Online Volunteer role supports the OHCHR Guatemala office in implementing its annual work plan and strategic plan, with a focus on enhancing communication and human rights advocacy. The Graphic Design Support Volunteer will create high-impact visual materials to amplify the office's human rights work. In close coordination with the Public Information Officer, the volunteer will ensure coherent and effective messaging across communication platforms. This assignment offers practical experience in internal and external communications within a UN human rights office, fostering collaboration and communication skills across thematic areas. The volunteer will design visuals for social media and the office website, contributing to increased visibility of successful interventions.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Public Information Officer, the Online Volunteer will support the creation of visual materials. Key tasks include developing at least four social media designs related to UN international days and OHCHR's work. Additionally, the volunteer will design a short social media campaign, comprising at least six images or animations, to disseminate human rights standards aligned with the office's thematic priorities in Guatemala. All materials must adhere to the OHCHR design style guide, which will be provided. The designs should be consistent, effective, and amplify the office's human rights efforts.
Work Experience
Requires at least two relevant experiences in graphic or multimedia design, with a portfolio to demonstrate work. Professional experience in graphic design, including document layout and design, is necessary. Experience in video editing and motion graphics animation is desirable but not essential. Experience designing materials on human rights or for vulnerable populations is an advantage.
Skills
Proficiency in graphic design software (Adobe Suite, Canva, or similar). Strong graphic and multimedia design skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills in Spanish. Experience in document design and layout. Desirable skills include video editing and motion graphics animation. Experience with human rights-related materials or campaigns for vulnerable groups is a plus.
