Democratic Governance Officer
Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works globally to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality, focusing on sustainable development, democratic governance, and climate resilience. The UNDP Sub-Regional Hub for West and Central Africa (WACA) in Dakar, Senegal, supports 24 country offices in strengthening resilience and sustainable development. It prioritizes governance, youth, renewable energy, climate action, and livelihoods, aligning with the UNDP Corporate Strategic Plan and Africa Offer.
Job Purpose
This role supports the UNDP WACA Hub and 24 West and Central African countries by focusing on strategic analysis, knowledge generation, and project implementation to promote civil and political rights, broaden democratic space, and rebuild public trust. The position is crucial for addressing recent fluctuations in the democratic landscape and increased citizen demand for broader civic participation in the region. The officer will contribute to SDG 16.6 and 16.7, ensuring effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions and decision-making processes, aligning with international human rights covenants and the AU Charter.
Responsibilities
The Democratic Governance Officer will conduct strategic analysis on democratic governance and civic participation for countries and the region. They will propose knowledge products on regional and national democratic governance trends. The role involves supporting the development and implementation of democratic governance projects and ensuring the effective execution of initiatives within the AU and UNDP Africa Facility for Inclusive Transition framework. Additionally, the officer will promote resource mobilization for UNDP's democratic governance initiatives, contribute to the UNDP WACA regional governance program, and assist in developing knowledge and communication products.
Work Experience
Requires 3 years of relevant experience, including technical and advisory work on democratic governance at national and regional levels. Experience in capacity development for civic and political rights, using modern technology for promoting rights, managing good governance projects, developing partnerships, and resource mobilization is essential.
