Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mexico works to combat drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism, promoting justice and the rule of law. This role supports the ALERT (MEXAL6) project, funded by Canada, which focuses on dismantling clandestine labs and strengthening criminal investigations related to synthetic drugs. The project aims to improve national intelligence and criminal investigation efforts.
Job Purpose
The Project Support Associate for Synthetic Drugs plays a crucial role in supporting the effective implementation of the ALERT (MEXAL6) project within UNODC Mexico. This position is integral to the Global Programme on Forensic and Scientific Services, specifically under the STAND Programme. The associate will provide essential support for project deliverables, operational processes, and reporting, ensuring alignment with UNODC standards, donor requirements, and project outcomes. The role contributes to strengthening criminal investigations and intelligence efforts by supporting activities related to the identification, seizure, and evidence collection during the dismantling of clandestine laboratories involved in synthetic drug production.
Responsibilities
The Project Support Associate will assist senior technical staff and the Project Coordinator in engaging with project counterparts, identifying needs, and supporting capacity-building efforts related to synthetic drugs, clandestine labs, controlled substances, and precursor chemicals. Responsibilities include conducting documentary analysis, preparing evidence-based deliverables, and assisting in the design and validation of materials and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for evidence management and criminal investigations. The associate will also support the logistics and execution of training sessions, workshops, and meetings, facilitate working groups with relevant institutions, and serve as a liaison with service providers and external consultants. Furthermore, the role involves supporting monitoring tools, tracking progress, compiling project documentation, assisting in report drafting and quality control, and ensuring compliance with project, UNODC, and donor policies.
Work Experience
Required: Relevant experience supporting activities related to synthetic drugs, controlled substances, drug control, or similar fields. Experience in capacity building or training for security, justice, forensic, or regulatory institutions. Experience in criminal investigations related to organized crime or illicit drug production. Proficiency in MS Office, G-Suite, or equivalent productivity tools. Desirable: Knowledge of illicit synthetic drug production, clandestine labs, controlled substances, precursors, or drug control frameworks. Experience working with UN system organizations.
