UNOPS
Remote / Home-basedEnvironmental Strategy Advisor (Menstrual Health Markets)
Organizational Context
The UNOPS Global Portfolios Office (GPO) supports sustainable development, climate action, and peacebuilding globally. Based in Geneva, it collaborates with partners to deliver services like project management and fund management. The Sanitation and Hygiene Fund (SHF), a key initiative, focuses on improving access to sanitation, hygiene, and menstrual health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, by promoting sustainable market-based solutions.
Job Purpose
The Environmental Strategy Advisor will lead the strategic development of the Sanitation and Hygiene Fund's (SHF) stance and guidance on the environmental impacts of menstrual products throughout their value chains. This role is crucial for establishing an evidence-based position on circularity, climate, and environmental (CCE) considerations within menstrual health market development. The advisor will identify knowledge gaps, guide evidence generation, and translate findings into actionable strategies and practical pathways. This will enhance SHF's technical guidance, policy engagement, and partnerships, ultimately integrating environmental sustainability into menstrual health market development and shaping future research and market-shaping efforts.
Responsibilities
The Environmental Strategy Advisor will conduct market research and analysis, reviewing existing documentation to identify key action research areas concerning the CCE impacts of menstrual product value chains. This involves convening and consulting technical experts to gather evidence, and analyzing data across product types to quantify impacts. The role includes mapping intervention points across relevant government ministries and consulting with stakeholders to refine policy pathways. A prioritization matrix will be used to weigh environmental issues against SHF's action capacity. The advisor will draft SHF's official position paper, outlining direct actions, indirect guidance, and areas for exclusion, and identify priority recommendations for future research, policy development, and pilot initiatives.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of professional experience in environmental analysis, sustainability strategy, or related fields is required. Demonstrated experience in action research, literature reviews, and producing evidence-based policy or strategy documents is essential.
