The UNOPS Africa Regional Office oversees over 250 projects in 40 countries, focusing on fragile and conflict-affected settings. The Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office (HAMCO) in Addis Ababa delivers project management, procurement, and infrastructure services across Djibouti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan, with a focus on health, agriculture, and economic development. This role is crucial for developing safe and durable structural solutions for diverse projects.

Job Purpose

The Lead Structural Engineer provides authoritative advice and manages structural design projects within the Horn of Africa, adapting approaches to meet evolving client and project needs. This role involves independently conducting structural analysis, developing innovative design solutions, and ensuring strict adherence to international standards. The incumbent supervises the technical aspects of project delivery, significantly contributing to the successful implementation of UNOPS' infrastructure mandate. The position is key to ensuring the safety, durability, and efficiency of critical infrastructure projects, thereby supporting sustainable development and resilience in challenging regions.

Responsibilities

The Lead Structural Engineer is responsible for comprehensive site assessment and investigation follow-up, reviewing site conditions, interpreting survey and geotechnical data, and evaluating soil properties to inform design decisions. They will perform structural system selection, design, and analysis for buildings and civil works, ensuring solutions are safe, durable, and constructible, while adhering to international standards. Key duties include preparing detailed design deliverables such as drawings, calculations, reports, specifications, and Bills of Quantities. The role also involves providing technical input for procurement, supporting tender document preparation, and clarifying queries during bidding. Furthermore, the engineer will offer construction support, review shop drawings and material submissions, resolve site technical issues, and ensure compliance with design intent. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and knowledge management are also essential functions.

Work Experience

Required experience includes structural design of buildings and civil works, analysis of reinforced concrete/steel structures, preparation of design documents and BoQs, and proficiency with structural design software. Experience interpreting survey and geotechnical reports is essential. Experience in infrastructure projects, international standards, or UN work is desirable.
