Organizational Context
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) Syria Programme, based in Damascus, is a key coordinator of humanitarian mine action. It supports the UN Country Team by ensuring safe access for humanitarian and development operations and advises the Syrian Government on establishing a national mine action authority. UNMAS leads the Mine Action Area of Responsibility, coordinating efforts within the broader humanitarian framework to mitigate the impact of explosive hazards.
Job Purpose
The Operations Senior Assistant - Risk Education supports the management of Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) activities within UNMAS Syria. This role is crucial for strengthening standardized and quality-assured EORE delivery, aligning with International and National Mine Action Standards and UNMAS guidance. The incumbent will assist in all phases of EORE, from design to impact measurement, contributing to the reduction of harm from explosive ordnance contamination. This involves supporting UNMAS, national mine action centers, UN agencies, and NGOs to ensure effective EORE implementation and integration into humanitarian systems, ultimately aiming to reduce civilian casualties and enhance community safety.
Responsibilities
The Operations Senior Assistant - Risk Education provides essential support to the Head of the EORE Unit in managing EORE delivery. This includes administrative and logistical assistance for EORE programs and department activities, and helping to prepare and present EORE programs. The role involves assisting in the planning and design of training packages, including for EORE facilitators, and delivering EORE sessions to humanitarian personnel and staff from UN and NGOs. The assistant will also help develop training materials, new EORE initiatives, and monitoring and evaluation tools, while maintaining records of all EORE activities and preparing reports. Furthermore, the role supports quality management by assisting in identifying community needs, reviewing EORE capacities, conducting monitoring visits, and evaluating implementing partners' activities. Coordination with partners and authorities for EORE and Victim Assistance is also a key function, alongside assisting with task files, managing warehouse inventory of EORE materials, and documenting activities through photography.
Work Experience
Required experience includes delivering EORE with a recognized organization, delivering training, proficiency with computers and MS Office, and drafting and report writing. Desired experience includes working in multicultural environments or with UN system organizations in a developing country, and experience in community-based education and public information campaigns.
