The UNOPS Global Portfolios Office (GPO) supports sustainable development, climate action, and peacebuilding globally. Based in Geneva, it facilitates the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs by providing services to governments and UN agencies. The Global Platform for Action on Sustainable Energy in Displacement Settings (GPA), hosted by UNOPS, focuses on ensuring access to sustainable energy in displacement and fragile contexts through collaboration and advocacy.
Job Purpose
The Senior Communications Advisor will enhance the GPA's communication and advocacy efforts to increase the visibility, influence, and impact of its work on sustainable energy solutions in displacement and fragile settings. This role involves refining messaging, targeting audiences, and strategically positioning GPA's initiatives to align with policy, partnership, fundraising, and program objectives. The advisor will craft compelling narratives and develop various communication materials, including advocacy campaigns, digital content, case studies, and speeches, translating technical and field evidence into persuasive messages for diverse stakeholders such as governments, donors, humanitarian agencies, and private sector partners. Additionally, the role will support GPA partners in their advocacy efforts, coordinate communications around key events, build GPA's profile through media and thought leadership, and ensure brand consistency and quality.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and advocacy strategy to boost GPA's visibility and impact on sustainable energy in displacement settings. Provide strategic advice to enhance existing activities, ensuring alignment with GPA's overall strategy, programs, policy, partnerships, and fundraising goals. Translate complex technical, policy, and field evidence into clear, persuasive content for diverse audiences, including governments, donors, humanitarian agencies, and community organizations. Lead the creation of high-quality communication products such as advocacy briefs, campaign materials, web content, newsletters, speeches, and case studies, highlighting the practical value of sustainable energy solutions. Strengthen advocacy efforts around key policy and investment opportunities, developing targeted campaigns to mobilize partners and influence policy processes. Build GPA's profile through media engagement, thought leadership, and strategic digital activities, fostering relationships with communications counterparts across various organizations. Enhance GPA's digital presence, manage brand consistency, and track communication performance to demonstrate impact and inform future strategies.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience in advocacy and communications, including 3 years at a senior management level, is required. Proven experience of 5 years in strategic advocacy or communication, with a focus on energy, environment, climate, or sustainability, is essential. Experience working in challenging and politically complex situations is also required. Experience in developing countries or displacement-affected regions is desirable.
