Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is an operational arm of the UN, supporting partners in peacebuilding, humanitarian, and development projects globally. The Global Portfolios Office (GPO) leads multi-regional initiatives, and this role supports the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) mandate through HR services. The role is based in Accra, Ghana, within the Sustainable Development Cluster.
Job Purpose
The Driver's primary purpose is to ensure the safe, reliable, and timely transportation of authorized personnel and, when necessary, cargo or hazardous goods. This role is crucial for the smooth operation of UNODC activities in Accra, facilitating the movement of staff and essential items. The incumbent must demonstrate exceptional professionalism, courtesy, and discretion, effectively interacting with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. By maintaining vehicle integrity and adhering to all driving regulations, the Driver directly contributes to the efficiency and safety of the mission's operational support.
Responsibilities
The Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and timely transportation for authorized personnel and cargo. This includes collecting and delivering mail, documents, and other items, as well as meeting and assisting personnel at the airport, including immigration and customs. The role requires maintaining accurate daily vehicle logs and contributing to maintenance plans. The Driver must perform routine vehicle checks, conduct minor repairs, and ensure vehicles are kept clean and roadworthy. They are also responsible for the safekeeping of all necessary vehicle documents and supplies. In the event of an accident, immediate action must be taken according to organizational regulations. Additionally, the Driver will support administrative functions by assisting with procurement processes, managing office supply inventory, and coordinating minor repairs for facilities and equipment.
Work Experience
Required experience includes safe driving, defensive driving, and minor vehicle repair. A strong knowledge of driving rules and regulations, along with driver's training and a valid driver's license, is essential. Experience working in multicultural environments or with UN system organizations in a developing country is desirable.
