Organizational Context
The UNOPS Global Portfolios Office (GPO) supports sustainable development, climate action, and peacebuilding globally. The Department of Operational Support (DOS) within UNOPS maintains ICT infrastructure for peacekeeping and special political missions. This role sits within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) at the UN Global Service Center (UNGSC), providing critical technology services to field operations.
Job Purpose
The ICT Officer - Geospatial Data Engineer is responsible for delivering timely, accurate, and reliable geospatial data management services to support UN field missions and headquarters. This role ensures consistent application of geospatial data management processes, standards, and tools to enhance data quality, accessibility, interoperability, and governance. The incumbent aligns all activities with UNGSC business objectives and UN policies, contributing to the coordinated delivery of geospatial data services across global operations and diverse operational contexts, ultimately supporting critical decision-making in complex environments.
Responsibilities
The role involves developing and delivering geospatial data management services for UN operations, managing the collection, validation, and harmonization of diverse geospatial datasets. Responsibilities include supporting the implementation of enterprise geospatial data models, standards, and governance frameworks, and managing data pipelines for ingestion, processing, and distribution. The incumbent will integrate multi-source geospatial and operational data, maintain geospatial repositories, and prepare data for operational dashboards and analytical applications. Additionally, the role focuses on implementing data governance and access control procedures, contributing to innovative data management methodologies and automation tools, and ensuring data quality through validation rules and monitoring mechanisms. Coordination with stakeholders and troubleshooting data pipelines are also key functions.
Work Experience
Required experience includes data engineering, data pipelines, and data platform management, with a focus on modern data architecture. Experience designing and maintaining end-to-end data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and working with data lake/warehouse/Lakehouse architectures is necessary. Proficiency in Python, SQL, and data processing frameworks, along with professional knowledge of ArcGIS or comparable GIS software, is essential. Desired experience includes data quality management, GeoAI techniques, and familiarity with UN operational environments.
