The Ukraine and Eastern Europe Multi-Country Office (UEMCO) specifically addresses urgent humanitarian needs and recovery pathways in Ukraine, Moldova, and Poland, focusing on large-scale infrastructure, energy, housing, education, and mine action projects.

Job Purpose

The Communications Senior Associate (Translator/Interpreter) will provide essential linguistic support for UNOPS's EOD Capacity Development Programme in Ukraine. This role is critical for ensuring the precise communication of technical content related to mine action and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) between international instructors and Ukrainian partners. The incumbent will translate complex technical materials and interpret during training sessions, field deployments, and coordination meetings. By facilitating clear communication, the Translator/Interpreter will directly contribute to the programme's success, enhance capacity building efforts, and support quality assurance activities, ultimately aiding in the national response to explosive ordnance contamination.

Responsibilities

The role involves providing consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between English and Ukrainian during all Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) training sessions, ensuring accurate conveyance of HMA and EOD terminology and maintaining consistency. Responsibilities include translating training materials, lesson plans, and reference documents from English to Ukrainian, and reviewing Ukrainian materials for accuracy. The position also supports quality assurance visits, partner liaison meetings, and reporting activities through translation and interpretation. General support includes accompanying teams to meetings and site visits, adhering to security protocols, and maintaining confidentiality of programme information.

Work Experience

Required experience includes interpretation (consecutive/simultaneous) and translation between English and Ukrainian, with demonstrated experience in technical, security, or humanitarian sectors involving complex terminology. Desired experience includes prior work with mine action programmes, UN agencies, or international organizations, and familiarity with specialized vocabulary related to explosive ordnance.
