Organizational Context
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Syria, operating under Security Council resolution 2165, coordinates humanitarian mine action and supports UN operations by enabling safe access. UNMAS collaborates with the Syrian Government and leads the Mine Action Area of Responsibility, focusing on risk education, victim assistance, survey, and clearance to mitigate the impact of explosive ordnance contamination.
Job Purpose
The Senior Security Assistant provides essential administrative and specialized support to manage safety and security operations effectively within UNOPS and the UN system in Syria. This role ensures a secure operating environment by facilitating timely information exchange, supporting the resolution of security issues, and promoting a proactive, client-oriented approach aligned with UNOPS policies and UN Security Management System standards. The incumbent plays a crucial role in maintaining operational continuity and safety for personnel and assets amidst significant explosive hazard contamination.
Responsibilities
The Senior Security Assistant is responsible for supporting security operations by gathering, verifying, and updating security information to aid in risk assessments and security plan development. This includes maintaining accurate personnel and site information, disseminating security updates, and monitoring compliance with mitigation measures. The role involves documenting and reporting security incidents, representing UNOPS at Security Cell meetings, and following up on security-related actions. Additionally, the assistant provides administrative and logistical support for security training, conducts basic security briefings for new personnel, and manages security clearance processes. In the absence of senior security staff, the incumbent coordinates with UNDSS on UNOPS security matters. The role also encompasses general administrative duties, preparing documents, operating emergency communication equipment, and maintaining secure records.
Work Experience
Required experience includes work in security operations, such as incident reporting, administrative support, security communications, and managing the warden system. Proficiency in collaboration tools (e.g., MS Office, G-Suite) and web-based management systems is also necessary. Experience in multicultural or developing country environments, particularly within the UN system, humanitarian, or development contexts, is desirable.
