Job Purpose
The Lead Biomedical Engineer provides essential technical expertise and project support within UNOPS Sudan's health portfolio. This role is crucial for identifying health system service gaps, evaluating medical equipment needs, and ensuring the effective implementation of health infrastructure projects. The engineer will define technical specifications for medical equipment, develop cost estimates, and collaborate with design teams for seamless integration into health facilities. By supporting the drafting of Terms of Reference, reviewing technical deliverables, and coordinating project implementation, this position directly contributes to upgrading healthcare infrastructure and expanding diagnostic capacity in Kassala state, ultimately improving public health access and outcomes in the region.
Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive technical assessments to identify health system service gaps and evaluate medical equipment requirements, considering technological advancements and regulatory compliance. Define and review technical specifications for medical equipment, develop equipment lists and layouts for optimal workflow, and prepare detailed cost estimates for procurement, installation, and maintenance. Support the drafting of Terms of Reference for consulting services in healthcare infrastructure development and review technical deliverables from consulting firms to ensure accuracy and compliance. Coordinate project implementation through site visits, verify adherence to specifications and quality standards, and participate in technical evaluations for equipment installations. Supervise equipment installation, testing, and commissioning, and support the development of standard operating procedures and user training for medical equipment.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in areas such as hospital planning, medical waste management, or medical equipment specification and installation. Experience in healthcare systems, regulations, and practices within the region, as well as in rehabilitation and construction of healthcare facilities, is desirable. Experience working with diverse health sector stakeholders and in development or humanitarian contexts is also beneficial.
