Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office for the Andean and Southern Cone (ROCOL) works with states and civil society to prevent drugs and crime from threatening security and development. The Integrated System for Monitoring Illicit Crops (SIMCI) project, part of UNODC, focuses on monitoring illicit crops and related crimes in Colombia. The Territorial Studies Area within SIMCI develops technical-scientific studies to understand the vulnerability of territories affected by illicit economies, supporting government actions against drug trafficking and related crimes.
Job Purpose
The Project Management Assistant (Territorial Studies) will provide essential support for documentary, logistical, and administrative tasks related to the research and analysis of illicit economies and their affected territories. This role is crucial for understanding the economic, historical, and social dimensions of these issues. The assistant will contribute to the design and implementation of research projects, assist in information gathering and systematization, and support the integration of cross-cutting approaches like gender and ethnic perspectives. A key aspect of the role involves participating in fieldwork missions to collect primary information, train counterparts, and disseminate findings, thereby facilitating a deeper comprehension of complex territorial dynamics and supporting evidence-based policy-making.
Responsibilities
Support research tasks by assisting the technical team with documentary, logistical, and administrative duties for national and regional research projects on licit and illicit economies. Aid in collecting information for designing qualitative and quantitative data collection instruments and incorporating intersectional perspectives. Assist in systematically reviewing information on illicit economies in affected territories and organizing data from documentary reviews and fieldwork for deliverables. Support administrative follow-up processes, including organizing documents and information related to the acquisition of resources for program implementation. Contribute to organizing information on methodological design and transversal approaches, including differential approaches (gender, ethnic, LGBTIQ+) and do-no-harm principles. Facilitate fieldwork by participating in information collection missions, training counterparts, and disseminating results, including logistical support and instrument design. Assist in operational and administrative management, including logistics for training, administrative support, technical reports, and participation in national/international meetings when delegated.
Work Experience
Required: Relevant experience in documentary, operational, and administrative support for research on organized crime dynamics or illicit economies and their relationship with territories. Desired: Experience within the UN system, participation in at least two research projects involving rural fieldwork, experience supporting the design of quantitative data collection tools, experience supporting technical or academic writing, and experience supporting the design and implementation of workshops and training.
