Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) operates in Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on resilient infrastructure and public health to drive sustainable development. The Southern Cone Multi-Country Office (SCMCO), based in Brazil, supports national priorities across Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, with a strong emphasis on public procurement and infrastructure projects. This role supports the National Fund for Educational Development (FNDE) in Brazil.
Job Purpose
This role is to provide specialized structural engineering expertise to support the UNOPS project aimed at strengthening education infrastructure management for traditional peoples in Brazil. The Structural Engineer will focus on the physical infrastructure evaluation of schools designated for completion by UNOPS. Working under the National Specialist in Construction Management, the engineer will contribute to achieving project Result 2 by analyzing and reviewing structural projects, ensuring compliance with national and UNOPS requirements, and providing technical guidance to enhance the quality and safety of educational facilities for indigenous and quilombola communities.
Responsibilities
The Structural Engineer will conduct technical and management control meetings, report on diagnostic activities, and support the development of Terms of Reference for diagnostics, projects, and works. Responsibilities include analyzing and reviewing structural engineering projects, suggesting adjustments, and ensuring alignment with national and UNOPS standards. The role involves preparing technical reports and opinions on structural projects, material specifications, and quality control. Additionally, the engineer will analyze budget spreadsheets, construction schedules, and physical-financial charts, formulate guidelines for structural project planning and execution, and ensure compatibility with other project specialties. The position also requires providing technical guidance, supporting the operational team in contract management, and documenting individual production for requested products.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in infrastructure projects and structural systems engineering, preferably with mixed structures (reinforced concrete, wood, steel), is required. Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google Workspace is necessary, along with advanced knowledge of structural design software such as Autocad or TQS. Experience with public sector projects or international organizations is desirable.
