The INFRAIGSS program, in partnership with IGSS, is in its second phase (2025-2030), prioritizing the construction and equipping of two new hospitals. This role is part of the INFRAIGGS project, specifically supporting the Regional Hospital of Oriente in Zacapa.
Job Purpose
The Health, Safety, Social and Environmental Associate - Occupational Health & Safety is responsible for ensuring that sustainability actions are integrated into UNOPS-executed projects and for establishing best practices in occupational health and safety. This role contributes to the safe and effective execution of construction projects, particularly the development of new hospital facilities, by proactively identifying and mitigating risks, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and promoting a culture of safety among all personnel involved in the project.
Responsibilities
The Associate will attend to field requirements in their specialty, assisting in monitoring the correct completion of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) formats and recommending corrective actions for non-compliance. They will verify the quality of OHS actions, support the creation of necessary control formats, and report issues affecting project results to the Project Manager. The role involves integrating sustainability and OHS actions according to UNOPS policies, conducting risk identification and assessments, and ensuring timely mitigation. Responsibilities include verifying OHS training for workers, maintaining site safety through daily inspections, anticipating hazardous situations, and investigating safety incidents and accidents, reporting findings and recommending improvements. The Associate will also inspect the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), orderliness, and signage, and review project HSSE plans, ensuring the implementation of UNOPS incident prevention campaigns and contributing to safety culture promotion through workshops and training.
Work Experience
Two to six years of relevant experience in Occupational Health and Safety is required, depending on academic credentials. Updated technical knowledge of national OHS standards, ISO standards, and experience in infrastructure projects are valued.
