Organizational Context
The UNOPS Africa Regional Office supports over 250 projects in 40 countries, focusing on fragile and conflict-affected regions. It provides strategic leadership and operational support across key areas including Health and Safety, Infrastructure, and Peacebuilding. The Central Africa Multi-Country Office (CAMCO) has been a partner since 1999, delivering technical assistance and capacity-building in sectors like infrastructure and health. In the Central African Republic (CAR), UNOPS has been active since 2014, supporting national development and peacebuilding through project management, procurement, and HR services.
Job Purpose
The Health, Safety, Social and Environmental Senior Analyst - Occupational Health & Safety is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring occupational health and safety policies and procedures, alongside managing the environmental and social aspects of projects. This role provides technical support to project teams, ensures compliance with applicable standards and regulations, and actively promotes a culture of occupational health and safety. The position offers a significant opportunity to impact worker well-being and project environmental and social management within the UN system, with exposure to large-scale projects and intercultural collaboration.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) for projects, ensuring compliance with UNOPS policies and donor requirements. Identify and assess project-specific environmental, social, health, and safety risks, proposing appropriate mitigation measures. Conduct regular environmental and social audits and monitor the implementation of recommendations. Manage local stakeholder relations concerning environmental and social issues. Contribute to awareness and training on environmental and social matters. Implement occupational health and safety performance monitoring systems, collecting and analyzing data on accidents and incidents to identify root causes. Conduct regular site inspections and audits for health and safety, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Prepare regular performance reports and propose improvements to enhance safety culture and reduce workplace incidents.
Work Experience
Requires at least 4 years of experience in occupational health and safety, environmental and social management, or a related field. Experience in implementing health and safety policies, managing environmental and social project aspects, and monitoring performance is essential. Desirable experience includes working in humanitarian or development contexts, with UN or international organizations, and specifically in Central Africa.
