Organizational Context
The UNOPS IT Group (ITG) drives digital transformation by designing, delivering, and managing global IT infrastructure and business applications. The Core Systems Engineering (CSE) team within ITG builds platforms, APIs, and reusable components powering UNOPS digital solutions, serving as the technical backbone for AI, Business Applications, and IT Operations teams. This role is home-based and requires alignment with Copenhagen time.
Job Purpose
The Systems Architect will design and deliver architectural blueprints, APIs, and reusable components essential for UNOPS digital services, under the guidance of the Lead Systems Engineer. This role involves hands-on design and development, coupled with mentoring other developers and integrating Responsible AI principles into system architecture. The architect will contribute to building scalable and secure digital foundations that support UNOPS operations across numerous countries, ensuring operational excellence and enabling the delivery of corporate initiatives and project implementations.
Responsibilities
Design and implement scalable, secure, and sustainable architectural blueprints for enterprise web applications, APIs, AI solutions, and integration layers, adhering to best practices and clean architecture principles. Architect data pipelines for AI and analytics, define API standards (RESTful conventions, versioning, authentication), and analyze emerging architectural patterns. Develop reusable project templates and starter kits to accelerate application development. Ensure all solutions are resilient, secure, scalable, and interoperable with enterprise and external systems. Mentor developers through code reviews and architectural guidance, and lead core component development, writing code as needed. Embed Responsible AI principles (privacy, transparency, fairness, explainability) into system architecture and provide technical expertise on AI/ML techniques. Collaborate with other architects and stakeholders to align platform capabilities with business requirements and field needs. Manage the handover process for platforms and templates, and establish a catalogue of reusable components and patterns.
Work Experience
Requires at least 3 years of experience in systems architecture or solutions design, with experience in writing/reviewing production code, defining API standards, and working with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). Experience implementing AI/ML solutions with Responsible AI principles and mentoring development teams is essential. Producing technical documentation is also required. Experience with data pipelines for AI/analytics, front-end patterns, DevOps, and international organizations is desirable.
