Organizational Context
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) operates within the UN system to coordinate mine action efforts, including clearance, risk education, and victim assistance. In Syria, UNMAS leads the Mine Action Sub Cluster, responding to extensive explosive hazard contamination resulting from conflict. The Senior Driver role supports these critical humanitarian mine action activities in Damascus.
Job Purpose
The Senior Driver is essential for ensuring the safe, reliable, and timely transportation of UNOPS personnel, consultants, and experts within Syria. This role directly supports the operational effectiveness of the UNMAS Syria Response Programme by facilitating movement for critical humanitarian mine action activities. Beyond driving, the incumbent provides vital logistical and administrative support, including assisting with airport transfers, delivering important documents, and managing vehicle maintenance. This multifaceted role contributes to the overall efficiency and success of UNMAS operations in a challenging environment, ensuring personnel and essential items reach their destinations securely and on schedule.
Responsibilities
Provide safe, reliable, and timely transportation for authorized personnel and cargo, including airport transfers and assistance with customs/immigration. Conduct routine vehicle checks, perform minor repairs, and ensure vehicles are clean, roadworthy, and fully equipped. Maintain accurate daily logs and contribute to vehicle maintenance planning. Deliver and collect mail, documents, and packages promptly to various UN agencies, government offices, and NGOs. Manage documents requiring protocol clearance and assist with routine clerical tasks such as binding and maintaining registers. Support logistical arrangements for meetings, workshops, and field missions. Assist in procurement processes by collecting quotations, making payments, and collecting supplies. Facilitate the delivery and inspection of procured items and manage shipment processes, including customs clearance.
Work Experience
Requires relevant experience in safe driving, defensive driving techniques, and performing minor vehicle repairs. A strong understanding of driving rules and regulations is essential. Experience working in multicultural environments or with UN system organizations in a developing country, particularly in development or humanitarian contexts, is desirable.
