Job Purpose
The Senior Environmental Engineer provides crucial technical expertise and strategic leadership for environmental remediation projects, particularly focusing on the clean-up of industrial pollution hotspots like the OHIS site in North Macedonia. This role is instrumental in ensuring the effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of remediation activities, adhering to international standards and best practices. By guiding technical assessments, reviewing designs, and overseeing cleanup operations, the engineer directly contributes to reducing environmental and public health risks, advancing sustainable development goals, and supporting the country's progress towards EU environmental accession requirements.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership and strategic guidance on environmental remediation, including site assessment, risk modeling, and long-term planning. Advise on international best practices and advanced remediation technologies. Review and validate technical documentation, feasibility studies, and monitoring plans. Support quality assurance and technical oversight of remediation works, mentoring national experts. Contribute to project work plans and budgets. Lead the preparation of technical specifications and Terms of Reference for remediation activities. Provide high-level technical assessments for environmental hot spots. Oversee environmental cleanup activities, monitoring progress and addressing technical risks. Design and implement environmental monitoring programs to assess remediation effectiveness. Review and interpret monitoring data, preparing technical reports. Provide input for Environmental Management Programmes, including closure and rehabilitation plans. Advise on permitting, regulatory compliance, and complex remediation processes. Identify and mitigate environmental risks. Facilitate knowledge transfer and contribute to training materials on remediation and hazardous waste management.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience in environmental remediation, encompassing site assessment and risk management, is required. Desirable experience includes working on international environmental projects, particularly in hazardous waste management, and familiarity with multi-partner environmental funds and contaminated site standards.
