Organizational Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Colombia works to prevent drugs and crime from threatening security and development. The SIMCI project, based in Bogotá, uses remote sensing and multidisciplinary data to monitor illicit activities and inform policy. This role supports the Analysis, Monitoring, and Innovation Area within SIMCI, focusing on digital image processing for territorial monitoring.
Job Purpose
The Technical Assistant in Satellite Image Digital Analysis and Processing will support the interdisciplinary team in achieving project objectives related to remote sensing and geospatial analysis. This role is crucial for the SIMCI project's efforts in monitoring illicit activities and informing policy decisions in Colombia. The assistant will contribute to the technical and methodological strengthening of the project by managing satellite data, from preprocessing to analysis and integration, and by supporting the development of research and automation models. This ensures the quality and reliability of geospatial products, which are vital for evidence-based decision-making and strengthening public policies.
Responsibilities
The Technical Assistant will support the search and download of satellite imagery and assist in organizing technical inputs and documentation for territorial analysis, maintaining administrative control of files. Responsibilities include supporting field data collection missions, ensuring equipment availability, and managing administrative records. The role involves maintaining an updated inventory of satellite images and geospatial inputs, organizing generated technical information for traceability, and archiving reports. Additionally, the assistant will support the compilation of inputs for verifying the operational status of remote sensing equipment and provide administrative support for workshops, meetings, and technical training events.
Work Experience
Required: Relevant experience in supporting the download and organization of digital files and technical inputs, and in filling out verification and control forms. Desirable: Experience with geospatial analysis and automation tools (QGIS, ArcGIS, Python, R), workflow automation, geospatial classification models, systematic visual interpretation, and experience in territorial monitoring projects (illicit crops, illegal mining, deforestation).
