Organizational Context
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Syria, based in Damascus, coordinates humanitarian mine action and supports UN operations by enabling safe access. UNMAS works with the Syrian Government and leads the National Authority Area of Responsibility. Globally, UNMAS is part of the UN Department of Peace Operations, coordinating mine action efforts across five key areas: clearance, risk education, victim assistance, advocacy, and stockpile destruction.
Job Purpose
The Support Services Associate is crucial for maintaining the operational integrity and accountability of organizational resources within UNMAS Syria. This role is responsible for the comprehensive management of the asset lifecycle, from initial receipt and registration through to maintenance and final disposal. Additionally, the Associate oversees essential logistics functions, including fleet management, fuel tracking, and facility inspections, ensuring that all operations are supported efficiently and effectively. This position directly contributes to the safe and successful execution of UNMAS's mandate in a challenging environment.
Responsibilities
Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of organizational assets, including inspection, registration in the asset management system, tagging, tracking, and disposal. Conduct regular asset verification, spot checks, and maintain accurate records. Oversee the maintenance of assets and ensure compliance with relevant documentation. Coordinate the planning of office supplies and preparation of expendable reports. Maintain orderly stores for assets and inventory. Implement and maintain systems for vehicle and generator maintenance, ensuring operational readiness and accurate record-keeping. Manage fuel supply and consumption meticulously. Conduct facility inspections and recommend necessary repairs. Assist with customs clearance of equipment. Contribute to knowledge sharing by synthesizing lessons learned and disseminating best practices.
Work Experience
Requires two to six years of relevant experience in logistics, assets, and/or vehicle operations, depending on educational qualifications. Two years of experience using collaboration tools (e.g., MS Office, G-Suite) and web-based management systems is also required. Experience in multicultural environments or UN system organizations in a developing country is desirable.
