Organizational Context

UNOPS operates across Africa, managing over 250 projects in 40 countries, focusing on fragile and conflict-affected regions. The North Africa Multi-Country Office (NAMCO) in Tunis supports operations in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, and Morocco, contributing to socio-economic development through projects in health, justice, climate action, and environmental preservation, aligning with the SDGs.

Job Purpose

The Lead Architect will be crucial for designing and optimizing spaces and structures for UNOPS infrastructure projects, particularly in remote or challenging environments. This role involves creating functional and aesthetically pleasing designs, ensuring seamless integration with other technical disciplines, and adhering to environmental standards. The architect will produce detailed architectural plans, technical specifications, and participate in project reviews. For new constructions, they will develop architectural plans, coordinate with engineers, and prepare detailed documentation. For rehabilitations, they will conduct site surveys, produce existing plans, demolition plans, and project plans, ensuring all work complies with current norms and regulations.

Responsibilities

The Lead Architect is responsible for achieving project outcomes effectively, enhancing UNOPS' reputation as a quality project management service provider. Key deliverables include a comprehensive dossier of all plans and specifications, which will serve as the basis for other technical lots (electrical, plumbing, etc.). The architect must also provide as-built plans after provisional acceptance and adhere strictly to the mission's timeline. Confidentiality of all project documents and plans is paramount, requiring the consultant to maintain strict adherence to UNOPS' confidentiality policies throughout the engagement.

Work Experience

A minimum of 5 years of experience in architectural design for buildings is required. Experience in healthcare facilities is preferred, and prior experience within the United Nations system is considered an asset.
