Medical Specialist - Occupational Health
Organizational Context
The Infrastructure and Project Management Group (IPMG) at UNOPS focuses on project, infrastructure, and financial management services to support sustainable development goals. This role sits within the Environmental and Social Sustainability (ESS) Unit, specifically contributing to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) framework, which is based on international standards and aims to minimize harm to workers and communities.
Job Purpose
The Medical Specialist - Occupational Health will provide crucial technical support and oversight for medical services and occupational health within UNOPS. This includes managing primary care, occupational health interventions, and emergency services. A key aspect of the role is facilitating capacity building, monitoring occupational health performance through appropriate indicators, and providing technical guidance for managing occupational health incidents. The position aims to ensure that health services and OHS standards, processes, and tools are fit-for-purpose, occupational health exposures are identified and mitigated, and UN interagency expectations for health services are met, thereby enhancing resilience to occupational health exposures.
Responsibilities
The role involves developing and implementing standards and technical requirements for occupational health and primary healthcare, aligned with UNOPS' context, and contributing to establishing OHS requirements. Responsibilities include creating guidance, tools, and processes for occupational health implementation and basic medical care, and establishing systems for identifying exposures, implementing controls, monitoring performance, and managing incidents. The specialist will contribute to setting key performance indicators for health services and occupational health, monitoring trends, and supporting performance improvement. Additionally, the role requires reviewing and supporting efforts to enhance health service quality, coordinating medical support for work-related illnesses, and contributing to UN interagency medical services initiatives. Training and knowledge management are also key, involving developing and delivering training programs and serving as a focal point for occupational health knowledge sharing.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a fully registered, licensed, and practicing medical doctor is required, with at least 3 of those years specifically in occupational health. Experience in humanitarian, development, or fragile settings, and in developing medical fitness standards or surveillance programs, is desirable.
