Job Purpose
The Chief Climate Officer, reporting to the Executive Director, provides strategic leadership for UNOPS' climate action initiatives. This role is pivotal in shaping the institution's direction, embedding climate intelligence into operations, and leveraging global partnerships. The objective is to influence how UNOPS delivers infrastructure, procurement, and project services across diverse contexts, elevating climate action as a core pillar of UNOPS' contribution to people and the planet. The ideal candidate combines strategic foresight with operational discipline to achieve ambitious climate goals.
Responsibilities
The Chief Climate Officer will lead the UNOPS Climate Action Programme (CAP) and Strategy, ensuring alignment with the Strategic Plan and Results Framework. This includes advising the Executive Director on climate strategy and policies, engaging the CAP Board, and anticipating emerging risks and opportunities. The role involves driving initiatives to reduce corporate and project emissions, manage Scope 1-3 emissions, and promote climate-resilient development. Additionally, the officer will provide strategic guidance to HQ units, strengthen climate risk screening and procurement processes, and ensure organizational climate neutrality. The position also entails leading a high-performing team, fostering a culture of trust and accountability, representing UNOPS in global forums, developing strategic alliances, and driving knowledge management and innovation in climate action.
Work Experience
Required experience includes demonstrated work in climate science, international climate policy, intergovernmental climate agreements, and engaging with scientific and policy communities. Desired experience includes working in multicultural environments, the UN system, or developing countries, along with leadership in change management and experience in development or humanitarian contexts.
