The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Global Portfolios Office (GPO) supports sustainable development, climate action, and peacebuilding globally. The Water, Environment and Climate (WEC) portfolio, part of GPO, manages over $500 million in projects. The NDC Partnership, jointly hosted by WRI, UNOPS, and UNFCCC, is a global coalition focused on climate action and sustainable development, with UNOPS contracting consultants for its projects.
Job Purpose
The NDC Support and Youth Engagement Officer will be embedded within Tonga's Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) to support the implementation of its climate action initiatives. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth execution of National Determined Contribution (NDC) processes and significantly enhancing youth participation in climate action. The officer will implement MEIDECC's Youth Awareness Strategy, coordinate stakeholder discussions, provide administrative support, conduct research, and develop training resources. By assisting the country's NDC Officer and National NDC Coordinator, the role directly contributes to Tonga's climate goals and fosters capacity building within relevant sectors.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive project management support, including assisting with planning, implementation, and monitoring of project activities. Offer administrative support to the project team, manage documentation, and track progress to identify and resolve potential challenges. Develop and execute strategies to actively engage youth in climate action and sustainable development, organizing workshops and creating platforms for their input. Coordinate effectively with government agencies, civil society, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless collaboration and information flow. Prepare regular progress reports, maintain accurate project records, and contribute to the creation of knowledge products and communication materials.
Work Experience
A Master's degree holder requires no professional experience, though it is an asset. A Bachelor's degree holder needs at least two years of experience in climate change or environmental issues within Tonga. Experience with youth groups, climate policy, project management, and stakeholder engagement is desirable.
