Organizational Context

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) supports the UN Humanitarian Coordinator. OCHA's mandate includes inter-agency coordination of humanitarian assistance in complex emergencies and natural disasters, information dissemination, and resource mobilization support. The role is based in Bunia.

Job Purpose

The Driver provides reliable and safe driving services for OCHA in the DRC, ensuring discretion, integrity, and responsibility. This role involves transporting personnel and goods, assisting with official errands, and supporting the reception of official visitors. The driver is crucial for OCHA's operational presence and its mission to facilitate humanitarian coordination, especially in complex environments like the response to the Ebola virus disease. The position requires adherence to UN protocols and security standards, contributing to the smooth functioning of OCHA's operations in the region.

Responsibilities

The Driver is responsible for operating official vehicles safely and reliably, including daily maintenance checks (oil, water, battery, brakes, tires) and performing minor repairs. Responsibilities include transporting staff, documents, and visitors, collecting and distributing mail, and running errands. The driver must maintain accurate logbooks of journeys, mileage, and fuel consumption, and ensure the vehicle is clean and well-maintained. They will also provide logistical support for office activities, such as seminars, and ensure all accident procedures are followed. The role requires discretion, integrity, and a client-centered approach, working effectively with diverse individuals.

Work Experience

At least two years of relevant professional experience as a Driver with a clean driving record is required. Experience in vehicle maintenance and minor repairs is necessary. Experience within the UN system, OCHA, or an international NGO is desirable. Familiarity with the Eastern DRC region and experience driving armored vehicles are advantageous.
