Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) mobilizes and coordinates humanitarian action to alleviate suffering, advocate for rights, promote preparedness, and facilitate sustainable solutions. OCHA produces information products and services, promoting IM best practices. The Information Management Associate supports OCHA's Humanitarian Advisory Team (HAT) in Barbados, reporting to the Humanitarian Affairs Officer.
Job Purpose
The Information Management Associate is responsible for producing and delivering information management (IM) products and services to support OCHA's mission in the Eastern Caribbean. This role involves acting as a focal point for collecting, organizing, and analyzing humanitarian information to provide situation analyses. The Associate will foster collaboration among humanitarian actors, promote the use of standard IM tools, and maintain databases. A key contribution is transforming data into accessible information products, such as interactive dashboards, to inform humanitarian response and ensure regional trends are reflected in OCHA's reporting. The position also requires supporting the implementation of OCHA's strategy and potentially deploying to other countries for response missions.
Responsibilities
Serve as the primary contact for collecting, organizing, and analyzing information to generate humanitarian situation analyses for the Eastern Caribbean. Cultivate strong relationships with IM focal points across humanitarian organizations to enhance information sharing and joint analysis. Promote and ensure the consistent use of global standard IM tools and services (e.g., HDX, RWResponse, Kobo) within the humanitarian community. Maintain a comprehensive database of humanitarian actors, their sectors, and locations, and monitor activities using platforms like OCHA's 345W or Activity Info. Process and analyze data into various formats for information products, including interactive dashboards using Power BI. Monitor and analyze humanitarian situations to identify critical information needs, gaps, and sources. Support the regional OCHA information team in producing regular reports that reflect Caribbean humanitarian situations and trends. Coordinate with the Humanitarian Affairs Officer to promote work plan activities. Be prepared to deploy to other countries to support OCHA response missions as needed. Undertake any other duties assigned by the OCHA Regional Office or the Humanitarian Affairs Officer.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of three years of experience in information management, emergency or disaster management, or database management for candidates with a bachelor's degree. Candidates with a high school diploma need six years of experience in these fields. Experience working with international, regional, or national organizations and familiarity with the UN system are advantageous.
Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Experience creating interactive dashboards (Power BI). Experience with web-based management systems. Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and GIS is desirable. Ability to work productively under pressure and meet deadlines. Technical ability to work with online forms and systems. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and training abilities. Teamwork and client orientation. Accountability and technological awareness.
