Organizational Context
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) mobilizes and coordinates effective humanitarian action. Afghanistan faces severe crises, including conflict and natural disasters, increasing vulnerability. This role supports OCHA's global Information Management Strategy within this challenging context, aiming to alleviate suffering and promote sustainable solutions.
Job Purpose
The Information Management Officer (IMO) supports the implementation and maintenance of OCHA’s global Information Management Strategy under the supervision of the International IMO and the Head of the Information Management and Public Information Unit. The role is crucial for managing and analyzing humanitarian data, ensuring its quality, accuracy, and comparability. By transforming data into visual products and maps, the IMO contributes to effective advocacy, needs assessments, and information exchange among humanitarian partners. This position plays a key role in enhancing the overall effectiveness of UN humanitarian operations in Afghanistan.
Responsibilities
The Information Management Officer is responsible for data analysis, including designing and managing databases and data tools, ensuring data quality, and supporting needs analysis activities. They will also be involved in data visualization, creating interactive dashboards, reports, charts, and infographics to convey key messages and support advocacy. Content management for relevant web platforms, ensuring accuracy and adherence to standards, is another key duty. The role includes Geographic Information System (GIS) and mapping responsibilities, such as maintaining spatial datasets and producing map products. Furthermore, the IMO will support the coordination of information management working groups, facilitate information exchange, and provide training on information management tools to OCHA staff and partners.
Work Experience
A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required with a Master’s degree, or 4 years with a Bachelor’s degree. Experience should encompass information management, data management, GIS, mapping, data visualization, and analysis. Proficiency in Excel, graphic design, and mapping software (QGIS, ArcGIS) is essential. Experience with Power BI, SQL, R, or Python is highly desirable. Experience in disaster response or complex emergencies is also desirable.
