Organizational Context

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization, and environmental sustainability. UNIDO's mission is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development in Member States, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and SDG-9. The Directorate of Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Industrial Development (TCS) oversees strategies for sustainable industrial development, including environment, energy, MSMEs, and digitalization. The Division of Energy and Climate Action (TCS/ECA) assists Member States in transitioning to low-carbon economies by promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and breakthrough technologies. The Energy Systems and Industrial Decarbonization Unit (TCS/ECA/ESD) focuses on deploying sustainable energy technologies for decarbonizing energy systems and industrial processes, supporting net-zero industrial development pathways and carbon management.

Job Purpose

This internship, funded by the GEF-funded project 'Decarbonization and sustainable cities for a net-zero future in Malaysia', supports integrated urban planning, financing, and technology deployment for sustainable, climate-resilient, net-zero carbon cities. It addresses challenges related to emissions, urbanization, biodiversity loss, and green technology financing. Key interventions include promoting sustainable mobility, nature-based solutions, integrated urban planning, and climate finance mechanisms, while strengthening institutional capacities and stakeholder coordination.

Responsibilities

Support the implementation of the GEF-8 Sustainable Cities Integrated Programme (SCIP) in Malaysia and contribute to GEF-9 SCIP country concepts. Conduct research and technical analysis on urban-industrial decarbonization, sustainable cities, and climate finance. Prepare presentations and knowledge products. Assist with stakeholder consultations. Contribute to developing an AI-enhanced diagnostic framework for the City-Industry Climate Nexus for a UNIDO white paper on urban-industrial decarbonization, including indicator and dataset assessment and framework development for identifying decarbonization opportunities and informing climate action planning. Prepare an end-of-internship report.
