Organizational Context

UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, defend their rights, and help them fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. At UNICEF, we are committed, passionate, and proud of what we do for as long as we are needed. Promoting the rights of every child is not just a job – it is a calling.

Job Purpose

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life, her or his rights are violated. Investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens addresses inequity, giving all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential and leading to sustained growth and stability. This focus accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations. As a Health & Nutrition Officer, you will make a lasting impact on the health and nutrition of children, adolescents and women in Bhutan, contributing to this vital mission.

Responsibilities

As a Health & Nutrition Officer, you will provide comprehensive technical, analytical, and strategic support essential for strengthening policies, systems, and programmes aimed at improving maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition outcomes. This involves close collaboration with government counterparts, development partners, and various stakeholders to foster a coordinated approach. Your contributions will be crucial in evidence generation, ensuring that interventions are data-driven, and in robust policy advocacy to influence decision-making processes. You will actively participate in programme design, ensuring relevance and effectiveness, and oversee monitoring activities to track progress and identify areas for improvement. Furthermore, you will focus on systems strengthening to achieve equitable and sustainable results across the health and nutrition spectrum. Key priorities for this role include advancing environmental health initiatives, developing climate-resilient health systems, implementing strategies for childhood lead exposure prevention, and ensuring the sustainability of immunization programmes. This multifaceted role requires a proactive approach to analyzing complex data, identifying critical gaps in service delivery, and proposing innovative, context-specific solutions to address prevailing health and nutrition challenges in Bhutan. You will also be instrumental in facilitating capacity building for local partners, ensuring that UNICEF's interventions are not only aligned with national priorities but also adhere to international best practices, thereby making a significant and lasting impact on the well-being of children and women.
