Job Purpose

The Legal Consultant (Special Initiatives) will provide substantive legal advice on a range of critical areas, including commercial contracts, complex data sharing agreements, and Open Source licensing. The role involves advising on partnerships with various entities such as UN organizations, governments, international financial institutions, civil society, and private sector partners, all crucial for UNICEF’s programmes and resource mobilization efforts. Additionally, the consultant will provide guidance on institutional matters, including UN privileges and immunities and governance frameworks, as well as the development and interpretation of internal regulatory instruments. This position requires close collaboration with diverse teams across the organization, from headquarters to regional and country offices, operating in varied development and humanitarian contexts.

Responsibilities

The Legal Consultant will provide substantive legal advice on commercial contracts, including complex and innovative arrangements, and complex data sharing use and agreements. They will also advise on contracts and agreements related to Open Source licensing. A key responsibility is to provide legal counsel on partnerships with other UN organizations, governments, international financial institutions, civil society, and private sector partners, supporting UNICEF’s programmes and resource mobilization. The consultant will also address institutional matters, including UN privileges and immunities and governance frameworks, and contribute to the development and interpretation of internal regulatory instruments. Furthermore, the role involves advising on the structuring and negotiation of key partnership, commercial, and financial arrangements for Special Initiatives, including the development and review of complex contracts, agreements, templates, and legal frameworks. Collaboration with teams at headquarters, divisional, regional, and country office levels in diverse development and humanitarian contexts is essential.

Work Experience

A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible professional legal experience in the practice of law, preferably within the legal team of an international organization.
