Job Purpose

UNICEF Nigeria is seeking three National Consultants to translate an Adolescent Girls Storybook, co-created with adolescent girls, from English into Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. The goal is to expand access and use of this empowerment tool across Nigeria's major linguistic communities. The translations must accurately preserve the meaning, tone, cultural sensitivity, child-rights framing, and storytelling style of the original English version. The translated storybook will serve as a vital tool for girls' empowerment and learning, a future-focused narrative reflecting the Nigeria girls wish to shape, and an advocacy resource to promote enabling environments for girls' rights and opportunities.

Responsibilities

The consultants will be responsible for translating the complete English storybook and accompanying multimedia content into Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo, ensuring the preservation of original meaning, intent, storytelling voice, emotional tone, and adolescent-friendly language. They must maintain gender-responsive, child-rights, and safeguarding terminology. This includes adapting idioms and expressions for cultural appropriateness without altering the intended message. Consultants will develop and apply a concise translation glossary for recurring terms and UNICEF terminology, and flag any content requiring UNICEF decision-making. They will conduct linguistic editing and proofreading for their respective language versions, ensuring internal consistency in names, headings, captions, and terminology. For firms/teams, an independent review by qualified language editors/proofreaders is required. Consultants will participate in UNICEF review sessions, incorporate feedback, and submit revised versions. Finally, they will deliver publication-ready translated manuscripts and review the designed layout to confirm linguistic accuracy, formatting, text flow, punctuation, and readability, ensuring translations avoid stereotypes and communicate girls' empowerment, resilience, leadership, and innovation.

Work Experience

A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in translation, interpretation, or a related language service is required. Experience translating for children or youth-focused materials is highly desirable.
