Job Purpose
The WASH Officer will contribute to improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene for children and communities, particularly the most vulnerable, by supporting the planning, implementation, monitoring, and documentation of WASH programs. This role ensures timely, accurate, and evidence-based program support, aids in emergency preparedness and response, and strengthens collaboration with partners for sustainable WASH outcomes. The position provides technical, operational, and administrative support throughout the WASH programming cycle, applying skills to research, analyze, and present program information, and supporting the development, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of WASH output results within the Country Programme. As an entry-level professional role, it builds familiarity with UNICEF procedures and systems.
Responsibilities
The WASH Officer is accountable for supporting the planning, implementation, monitoring, and documentation of WASH programs. Key responsibilities include:
Programme Development and Planning: Researching and analyzing national and sub-national trends in WASH, health, social, and economic development to inform program design. Collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information for situation analysis, program planning, and decision-making. Assisting in the development of WASH-related outcome and output results, strategies, and work plans. Preparing technical reports and documentation for program approval processes.
Programme Management, Monitoring, and Delivery of Results: Collaborating with colleagues and partners to identify and address program implementation issues and bottlenecks. Participating in monitoring and evaluation exercises, program reviews, and preparing minutes and follow-up actions. Monitoring the use of program resources, ensuring compliance with allocations, UNICEF rules, and donor commitments. Maintaining records of reports and findings to support learning and documentation. Preparing accurate and timely inputs for program and donor reporting.
Technical and Operational Support: Undertaking field visits and surveys to collect information and share reports with partners. Identifying and reporting critical issues and bottlenecks to the supervisor. Providing technical and operational support to government counterparts, NGO partners, UN system partners, and other stakeholders on UNICEF policies and strategies.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of professional experience in WASH programming, including experience in programme planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. Experience in emergency WASH response is an asset. Familiarity with UNICEF's rules, regulations, procedures, and systems is desirable.
