Job Purpose

The consultant will develop a new Helping Adolescent Thrive (HAT) Comic Book and accompanying Teacher’s Guide specifically for adolescents aged 15-19 years in Bhutan. This initiative aims to address key mental wellbeing issues and provide practical, age-appropriate tools for promoting socio-emotional learning, empathy, and resilience. The resources will be co-created with adolescents from pilot schools, building on the success of the previous "Magnificent Meto and Friends" comic book. The goal is to enhance adolescent mental health support and socio-emotional skills, making them more comfortable seeking help and improving their overall wellbeing, in line with the HAT Initiative's objectives.

Responsibilities

Develop a new HAT Comic Book and accompanying Teacher’s Guide tailored for adolescents aged 15-19 years in Bhutan. Conduct participatory consultations with adolescents from 24 pilot schools to co-create content that addresses their mental wellbeing issues and promotes socio-emotional learning, empathy, and resilience. Adapt existing HAT initiative guidelines and materials to be relevant and engaging for the target age group and Bhutanese context. Ensure content is evidence-based and aligns with WHO and UNICEF recommendations for adolescent mental health. Translate consultation findings and complex psychological concepts into actionable, age-appropriate content for the comic book and teacher’s guide. Collaborate with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MOESD) and PEMA Secretariat throughout the development process. Ensure all materials adhere to safeguarding and ethical engagement standards. Produce high-quality design and production-ready files for both the comic book and teacher’s guide. Facilitate workshops or feedback sessions with adolescents, teachers, and stakeholders to refine the developed materials. Ensure the final deliverables are culturally sensitive and resonate with Bhutanese adolescents.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of proven experience in developing adolescent-focused communication, education, or behaviour change materials. Experience conducting participatory consultations with adolescents and applying safeguarding standards is required.
