National consultancy to provide technical assistance on developing SOPs on heatwaves, sandstorms, and revision of teacher’s manual “Basics of Life Skills”.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to provide technical assistance in Turkmenistan to address the growing risks posed by climate change, specifically heatwaves and sandstorms, impacting children. The consultant will develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for educational and health facilities to mitigate these hazards, create community awareness messages, and revise/update the teacher's manual on "Basics of Life Skills." This initiative is crucial given Turkmenistan's increasing exposure to extreme heat and its disproportionate impact on children, as evidenced by regional data. The role involves adapting materials to the national context and aligning with existing national action plans, ultimately contributing to the protection of children's health and well-being in a changing climate.

Responsibilities

The consultant will be responsible for developing four SOPs, two for heatwaves and two for sand and dust storms, tailored for schools and primary health care facilities. These SOPs must align with the national "Plan of Actions to Prevent the Health Effects of Heat." Additionally, the consultant will create community messages to raise awareness about heatwaves and sandstorms. A significant part of the role involves revising and updating the existing teacher's manual titled "Basics of Life Skills: A Methodological Guide for Teachers." The consultant will also be responsible for conducting capacity-building sessions on the updated manual. This comprehensive approach ensures that educational and health systems are better prepared to handle climate-related emergencies and that teachers are equipped with essential life skills content to support children's development and resilience.

Work Experience

Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in public/environmental health or a related field. Experience in developing technical guidance, behavior-change materials, working with schools/healthcare facilities, or on climate/environmental health issues is required. Familiarity with the national context is a strong asset.
