Job Purpose
The WASH Specialist will support the development, preparation, management, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the WASH programme in Burundi. This role provides technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes to ensure the achievement of WASH-related output results within the country programme. The Specialist will enable the country office to meet its objectives in water, sanitation, and hygiene, contributing to improved child and maternal health, nutrition, education, child protection, and overall community resilience. The position is crucial for ensuring effective WASH interventions, especially in humanitarian preparedness and response scenarios, and for building partnerships to advance WASH policies and standards.
Responsibilities
The WASH Specialist is accountable for achieving WASH-related output results in the UNICEF Burundi country programme. Key responsibilities include: leading programme development and planning for WASH initiatives; managing, monitoring, and ensuring the delivery of results for WASH programmes; providing technical and operational support for the implementation of WASH activities; contributing to humanitarian WASH preparedness and response efforts; building and strengthening networks and partnerships with government bodies, NGOs, and other stakeholders; driving innovation, knowledge management, and capacity building within the WASH sector; representing UNICEF in technical working groups and sector forums; engaging with the government on policy support and advocacy for WASH policies and standards; overseeing the operation and maintenance of water and sanitation infrastructure; coordinating stakeholder efforts and developing partnerships; and building the capacity of partners. The role also involves data analysis and donor reporting to ensure accountability and resource mobilization for WASH programmes.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in WASH-related programmes in developing countries is required. This includes one year of deployment in a developing country and at least one three-month deployment mission in a humanitarian situation (with UN-Govt-INGO).
