Job Purpose

The Early Childhood Nutrition Officer provides essential technical, operational, and programme support for Early Childhood Nutrition initiatives within the Country Programme Cycle. This role is crucial for designing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating interventions aimed at improving nutrition outcomes during the critical first 1,000 days and early childhood. Key focus areas include infant and young child feeding, healthy complementary diets, micronutrient nutrition, growth monitoring and promotion, and the prevention and management of malnutrition. The position also supports the integration of nutrition within Early Childhood Development (ECD), nurturing care, and multisectoral programmes to ensure children survive, grow, learn, and reach their full potential. By executing technical and administrative programme tasks, the incumbent contributes to enhanced nutrition outcomes, including improved feeding practices, reduced stunting and wasting, lower infant mortality, and a decrease in obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases, aligning with UNICEF's Strategic Plans and results-based management approaches.

Responsibilities

The Early Childhood Nutrition Officer will provide technical and operational support throughout the programming process for Early Childhood Nutrition programmes and projects within the Country Programme Cycle. This includes contributing to the design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of interventions focused on improving nutrition outcomes during the first 1,000 days and early childhood. The role will concentrate on infant and young child feeding, healthy complementary diets, micronutrient nutrition, growth monitoring and promotion, and the prevention and management of malnutrition. Furthermore, the position will support the integration of nutrition within Early Childhood Development (ECD), nurturing care, and multisectoral programmes to ensure children survive, grow, learn, and reach their full potential. The incumbent will implement a variety of technical and administrative programme tasks to facilitate programme development, implementation, progress monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of results. This work aims to achieve improved nutrition outcomes for children, including enhancements in feeding and caring practices, reductions in stunting, wasting, and other forms of malnutrition, lower neonatal and infant mortality rates, and a decrease in obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases. All activities will be conducted in accordance with established plans, allocations, results-based management approaches, Rights and Results Programming (RRP), UNICEF's Strategic Plans, performance standards, and the accountability framework.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of professional experience in a developing country is required, with expertise in nutrition, public health, nutrition planning and management, or maternal, infant, and child health/nutrition care.
