Job Purpose

The Child Protection Officer (alternative care) will provide crucial technical assistance to the Government and partners in Venezuela. The role focuses on strengthening the child protection system, protocols, and capacities for identifying, managing cases, providing interim care, and facilitating family tracing and reunification for unaccompanied and separated children (UASC). This work must align with international standards and the specific emergency context arising from recent earthquakes and ongoing socioeconomic challenges. The officer will contribute to UNICEF's Strategic Plans and results-based management, ensuring that children affected by emergencies and crises receive appropriate protection and care, prioritizing family-based solutions in their best interest.

Responsibilities

The Child Protection Officer (alternative care) will support programme and project development and planning, ensuring alignment with UNICEF's strategic objectives and the specific needs of the Venezuelan context. They will manage programmes and projects, monitor their implementation, and ensure the delivery of results according to results-based management (RBM) approaches. The role involves providing technical and operational support to partners for the effective implementation of child protection activities, particularly concerning alternative care arrangements. Networking and partnership building with government bodies, UN agencies, and humanitarian partners will be essential for a coordinated and effective response. Furthermore, the officer will contribute to innovation, knowledge management, and capacity building within the child protection sector, sharing best practices and lessons learned. This includes developing and implementing protocols for the identification, case management, interim care, and reunification of unaccompanied and separated children, ensuring adherence to international standards and the best interests of the child.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of professional experience in child protection programming is required, with a specific focus on interim or alternative care for children in overseas contexts. This experience is crucial for understanding the complexities of child protection in diverse settings.
