Job Purpose
The Communication Specialist is accountable for developing, managing, coordinating, networking, implementing, and monitoring an advocacy and communication strategy. This includes creating associated products and activities for public audiences to promote awareness, understanding, support, and respect for children’s and women’s rights. The role aims to bolster support for UNICEF's mission, priorities, and programs at country, regional, and global levels, as well as for the UN Country Team. The incumbent will ensure that the Country Office maximizes opportunities for child rights advocacy, engages children and young people as champions, and maintains strong media relations to effectively communicate UNICEF's cooperation.
Responsibilities
Develop, manage, and implement advocacy and communication strategies and activities to promote children's and women's rights and UNICEF's mission. Ensure effective media relations by maintaining and developing contact lists of journalists and outlets, fostering regular communication and collaboration. Build and maintain a network of contacts with government, UN, and bilateral counterparts to support communication objectives. Engage national personalities to support UNICEF's efforts and participate in special events. Integrate and implement UNICEF’s global communications priorities and campaigns, adapting them for local contexts and enabling coverage for global use. Support global and country-level fundraising activities through effective communication strategies. Manage human and financial resources within the communication team, ensuring optimal use of the budget. Establish communication baselines, evaluate strategy effectiveness, and prepare timely reports. Provide professional expertise and advice on external relations communication to the Representative and country program team, identifying capacity-building opportunities for the communication team, media, and partners.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in communication, advocacy, media relations, or a related area is required. Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is essential.
