Job Purpose
The Advocacy and Communication Officer will support the Chief, Communication, Advocacy and Partnerships in designing and implementing integrated advocacy and communication strategies to achieve measurable results for children in Malawi. This role involves translating UNICEF's priorities into compelling narratives, briefs, campaigns, digital content, and high-profile events to influence decision-makers, mobilize public support, and enhance the visibility of children's rights. The officer will create engaging content such as reels, films, infographics, and photo stories, monitoring performance to optimize reach and impact. Additionally, the role will foster relationships with media outlets to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of UNICEF's stories. The position also includes supporting baseline assessments, monitoring, project coordination, and budget management, combining creativity with strategic judgment and attention to detail to advance advocacy efforts for children.
Responsibilities
Support the development, planning, and implementation of advocacy and communication strategies. Develop and execute digital communication plans, including content creation for social media platforms and online engagement. Manage media relations, including drafting press releases, organizing press conferences, and building relationships with journalists. Create engaging and impactful communication products such as reels, films, infographics, and photo-led stories. Track the performance of communication activities and refine approaches to improve reach and impact. Translate complex policy issues into accessible messaging for diverse audiences. Strengthen relationships with print, TV, radio, and digital media to ensure UNICEF's stories are shared accurately and promptly. Support baseline assessments, monitoring, and evaluation of advocacy and communication initiatives. Provide project coordination and budget management support for communication activities. Build the advocacy and communication capacity of internal teams and external partners. Engage with stakeholders, including government officials, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to advance children's rights. Ensure all communication activities align with UNICEF's brand guidelines and strategic objectives. Contribute to crisis communication efforts when necessary.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in strategic communication or campaigning at a national or regional/global level. At least one year of experience in developing and implementing advocacy plans or campaigns. Demonstrated experience in managing digital communications and online platforms, engaging with media, or working in a media outlet. Experience in project management and budget management is required. Knowledge of children's rights, public policy, international development, and humanitarian issues is essential.
