Job Purpose
Malnutrition remains a significant public health issue in Madagascar, hindering human and socio-economic development. Despite governmental and partner efforts, nutritional indicators are concerning across several regions, showing significant geographical disparities. To better understand the determinants of malnutrition and guide more effective interventions, the Government of Madagascar, via INSTAT, SNUT, and ONN, seeks an in-depth analysis of data from recent SMART and MICS surveys. This analysis aims to identify key risk factors associated with malnutrition in Antananarivo's six districts and other areas, depending on data availability (SMART 2026, MICS, and SMART Antananarivo 2025). The findings will help prioritize explanatory factors, assess their relative contribution, and propose operational recommendations tailored to each zone's specific context.
Responsibilities
The consultant will provide specialized technical support for the comprehensive analysis of malnutrition data, drawing from recent SMART and MICS surveys. This involves meticulously identifying the principal risk factors associated with malnutrition within the six districts of Antananarivo and other designated areas, based on data availability. A core responsibility includes the prioritization of these explanatory factors, evaluating their relative contribution to the overall malnutrition challenge, and subsequently developing actionable, operational recommendations that are precisely tailored to the specific contextual needs of each zone. Furthermore, the consultant is tasked with a significant capacity-building component. This entails facilitating a robust transfer of skills in nutritional and epidemiological analysis to key government teams, notably those at INSTAT, SNUT, and ONN. The objective is to empower these national entities to fully appropriate advanced analytical methods, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability and independence of future malnutrition analyses and strengthening local expertise for more effective public health interventions.
