Organizational Context
UNICEF operates in over 190 countries and territories, dedicated to saving children's lives, defending their rights, and helping them fulfill their potential. We are committed, passionate, and proud of our work, viewing the promotion of every child's rights as a calling. UNICEF fosters diverse opportunities for professional and personal development, encouraging a sense of purpose while serving children and communities globally.
Job Purpose
The consultant will be responsible for analyzing and mapping violence within and around schools in the provinces of Tanganyika, Kasaï, Nord Kivu, and Ituri. This role is crucial given the high rates of gender inequality and violence affecting children's education in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The consultant's work will inform UNICEF's strategies to address the root causes and consequences of violence, particularly gender-based violence, which leads to school dropout, especially for girls. The analysis will cover violence perpetrated by school staff and peers, as well as community-based violence impacting the school environment. The findings will be instrumental in developing targeted interventions to improve school safety, enhance learning outcomes, and protect children's well-being, contributing to UNICEF's mission of ensuring every child can fulfill their potential free from violence and discrimination.
Responsibilities
Conduct a comprehensive analysis and mapping of violence occurring within and around schools in the specified provinces (Tanganyika, Kasaï, Nord Kivu, Ituri). This includes identifying the types, prevalence, and patterns of violence, such as physical, psychological, and sexual violence, bullying, and online harassment. Investigate the perpetrators and victims of violence, distinguishing between school staff, peers, and community members. Analyze the specific vulnerabilities of different groups of children, including girls, boys, children with disabilities, and those from impoverished backgrounds. Examine the impact of violence on children's physical and mental health, well-being, school attendance, and academic performance. Collect and analyze relevant data from existing surveys (e.g., EDS, MICS) and conduct field research, including interviews and focus group discussions with students, teachers, parents, and community leaders. Map the geographical distribution of violence and identify high-risk areas and schools. Develop detailed reports and policy recommendations for UNICEF and government partners to prevent and respond to school-related violence. Present findings and recommendations to stakeholders, including government officials, educators, and community representatives. Ensure the methodology is gender-sensitive and child-centered throughout the consultancy.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in research, data analysis, and program development related to child protection, education, gender-based violence, or social development, preferably in a humanitarian or development context. Experience working in the Democratic Republic of Congo or similar fragile contexts is an asset.
