Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to contribute to UNICEF Innocenti's strategic priority of supporting and promoting child and youth participation in generating primary data and contributing to research and foresight exercises. The consultant will design, pilot, and conduct child participatory research studies, ensuring children's voices shape the evidence and solutions. This involves developing research tools, providing training and support to researchers and UNICEF staff on participatory methods, and conducting fieldwork, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of research findings. The consultant will work under the guidance of a research manager or specialist, contributing to better decision-making for children by providing robust evidence.
Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for designing child participatory research studies, which may include stand-alone projects or components of larger initiatives, often involving direct engagement with children. This includes piloting these studies, making necessary adjustments based on pilot findings, and preparing final research materials, including documentation for ethical review boards and toolkits for training. A key responsibility is to provide training and support to other researchers and UNICEF staff in conducting child participatory research, both online and in-person. This support extends to fieldwork preparation, data analysis, interpretation, and the preparation of results. The consultant will also conduct child participatory research studies, encompassing fieldwork, analysis, interpretation, writing research outputs, and disseminating results. Deliverables may include research tools, guidance, toolkits, training sessions, analysis write-ups, reports, and presentations, contributing to UNICEF's evidence-based approach for children.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of demonstrable experience in qualitative research with children and participatory work with children is required. Experience in research fieldwork with children in diverse contexts, including the Global South, and experience in training and supporting research fieldwork staff are also necessary.
