Organizational Context
UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, defend their rights, and help them fulfill their potential. Promoting the rights of every child is not just a job – it is a calling. We offer diverse opportunities for professional and personal development in a diverse and passionate culture.
Job Purpose
UNICEF's fundamental mission is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in programmes, advocacy, and operations. The equity strategy translates this commitment into action by focusing on the most disadvantaged and excluded children. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an equal chance to survive, develop, and reach their full potential — without discrimination. Investing in the most disadvantaged citizens not only fulfils every child's potential but also drives sustained growth and stability. This focus on equity accelerates progress toward realising the human rights of all children, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while supporting the equitable development of nations.
Responsibilities
The Chief of Education will provide strategic leadership to UNICEF’s education programme, balancing immediate humanitarian needs with longer-term system strengthening. This includes leading the development and implementation of innovative and evidence-based education strategies and programmes that address learning poverty, expand access to education, particularly for girls and marginalized children, and promote equitable learning outcomes. The role involves navigating complex political and operational environments, engaging with de facto authorities and diverse partners to protect and expand learning opportunities. The Chief will be responsible for managing a team, overseeing programme planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation, and ensuring alignment with UNICEF's global and country-specific education priorities. This includes advocating for children's right to education and mobilizing resources to support programme sustainability and impact.
