Job Purpose
The Child Protection Officer will report to the Health and Nutrition Officer, NOB, based in Nema, for close guidance and supervision, with technical advice from the Chief of Child Protection, P4, based in Nouakchott. The role involves providing technical, operational, and administrative assistance throughout the child protection programming process. This includes applying theoretical and technical skills in researching, collecting, analyzing, and presenting technical program information, while learning organizational rules, regulations, and procedures to support the development and formulation of the child protection program within the national framework. The officer will ensure preparedness and response to emergencies, including potential refugee influxes, while implementing UNICEF's regular programs in the region.
Responsibilities
The Child Protection Officer will support the government of Mauritania in ensuring every child is protected against violence, abuse, and exploitation, and that their birth is registered, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable. This involves strengthening access to prevention and protection services for children against all forms of violence. In the Hodh El Chargui region, the intervention will cover both Mauritanian communities and access to services for Malian refugee children. The UNICEF intervention aims to ensure all children have equal rights, contributing to the respect of children's rights and social cohesion. The officer will provide technical assistance, operational support, and administrative oversight for child protection programs. This includes conducting needs assessments, developing program strategies, implementing activities, and monitoring progress. The role requires collaboration with government counterparts, UN agencies, NGOs, and community stakeholders to ensure effective program delivery and coordination. The officer will also be responsible for preparing and submitting regular program reports, managing program budgets, and contributing to fundraising and resource mobilization efforts. Emergency preparedness and response, including contingency planning for refugee influxes, will be a key responsibility.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of professional experience in child protection, social work, or a related field is required. Experience working with vulnerable children and communities, particularly in emergency settings or with refugee populations, is an asset.
