Job Purpose
The internship aims to support UNICEF’s engagement with international human rights mechanisms in Geneva, specifically focusing on the Human Rights Council, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, and the Universal Periodic Review. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Geneva-based Human Rights Specialist. This role involves closely following and documenting proceedings of key human rights bodies, preparing internal notes and reports for UNICEF country offices and relevant units, and contributing to the development of guidance and tools for country offices on child rights issues. The position offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in international human rights advocacy and contribute to UNICEF's mandate of ensuring the rights of all children are realized.
Responsibilities
The intern will be responsible for following meetings of the Human Rights Council and preparing concise internal notes for distribution within UNICEF. This includes reviewing Human Rights Council background reports to identify and document mentions of children's rights. Additionally, the intern will follow sessions of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, preparing internal notes for the record to assist UNICEF country offices. A key responsibility will be supporting the Human Rights Unit in creating guidance and tools for country offices, particularly concerning children's civil and political rights. The intern will also attend sessions of other treaty bodies and relevant meetings, taking detailed notes as required. Assisting with other ad-hoc activities within the Human Rights Unit will also be part of the role, ensuring comprehensive support for UNICEF's human rights engagement.
Work Experience
Prior experience with permanent missions is considered an asset. Research experience and skills are necessary. The ability to work independently and manage time effectively within set deadlines is crucial.
