Job Purpose
The consultant will be responsible for producing illustrations and graphic design for an adolescent girls' storybook, contributing to the Gender and ADAP section in Nigeria. This role involves concept development, illustration production, book design and layout, multimedia asset development, and final review. The consultant will work closely with the lead writer and report to the UNICEF Nigeria Gender and Development Manager. The aim is to create engaging and culturally relevant visual content that supports the narrative and enhances the storybook's impact on adolescent girls, ensuring it is both print-ready and suitable for digital distribution. This consultancy is crucial for developing accessible and impactful communication materials for a key UNICEF program.
Responsibilities
Develop concepts for illustrations and graphic design elements that align with the storybook's themes and target audience. Produce high-quality illustrations that are culturally grounded, reflecting African aesthetics and representation, and suitable for adolescent audiences. Design the overall layout and structure of the storybook, ensuring a visually appealing and coherent flow. Create digital multimedia assets, such as graphics for social media or web use, derived from the storybook's illustrations. Collaborate effectively with the lead writer and other stakeholders to ensure the visual narrative complements the text. Review and finalize all design and illustration work, ensuring it meets UNICEF's quality standards and is print-ready and optimized for digital platforms. Ensure all visual content adheres to principles of gender equality and inclusion. Maintain clear communication throughout the consultancy period, providing regular updates on progress and addressing feedback promptly. Deliver final, polished artwork and design files in specified formats.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in illustration, graphic design, or visual storytelling is required. Proven experience in designing children's or adolescent educational materials and a demonstrated portfolio of published illustrated content are essential. Experience developing illustrations reflecting African contexts is also necessary.
