Job Purpose
The AI and Digital Innovation Intern will support UNICEF's efforts in leveraging Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies to advance its mission for children. This role involves assisting in the coordination of the AI roadmap, documenting AI use cases, and supporting AI learning initiatives. The intern will contribute to knowledge management by organizing resources and preparing materials for training sessions. Additionally, the position requires supporting engagement with the AI/NLP ecosystem in Sierra Leone, including documenting relevant actors and assisting in the planning of innovation activities. The intern will also provide support for digital innovation workstreams and reporting, helping to consolidate information and prepare knowledge products that demonstrate the impact of AI and digital innovation on achieving results for children. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in a dynamic field within a leading global organization.
Responsibilities
1. Support AI roadmap coordination and use case documentation: Assist in following up on the Sierra Leone AI Roadmap, including tracking focal points, quick wins, timelines, and action items. Help document practical AI use cases across program and operations sections. Coordinate with section focal points to capture AI-related needs, opportunities, challenges, and examples. Prepare concise meeting notes, action points, and updates from AI-related discussions. 2. Support AI learning, prompt engineering, and knowledge management: Aid in preparing materials for AI learning sessions, prompt engineering clinics, and practical demonstrations. Assist in documenting useful prompts, examples, lessons learned, and simple guidance notes for staff. Support the organization of AI resources, templates, presentations, and learning materials on internal platforms like SharePoint. Help collect feedback from AI learning activities and summarize key insights. 3. Support AI/NLP and ecosystem engagement: Document AI/NLP actors, national language technology groups, universities, youth innovators, and relevant partners in Sierra Leone. Assist in planning and documenting AI/NLP convenings, innovation challenges, hackathons, or youth-facing activities. Prepare draft inputs for AI/NLP concept notes, ecosystem briefs, and meeting summaries. 4. Support related digital innovation and reporting work: Provide documentation and follow-up support for digital innovation workstreams such as DPG/DPI mapping, DPG Academia, DPG Accelerator, CRAT, U-Report, Learning Passport, RapidPro, and other initiatives. Assist in maintaining trackers, consolidating updates, and organizing information for reporting, planning, and section coordination. Support the preparation of briefs, presentations, meeting notes, and knowledge products illustrating how AI and digital innovation contribute to results for children. Prepare an end-of-internship handover note summarizing work completed, key resources, pending actions, and recommendations.
Work Experience
Previous internship, academic, volunteer, or project experience related to AI, data, digital innovation, research, knowledge management, technology, or project coordination is advantageous. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) is required. Familiarity with generative AI tools, large language models, SharePoint, data visualization tools, GitHub, open-source platforms, or project management tools is desirable.
